Review:
It sounds like Shards was influenced by European minimal techno’s dark side. Over the course of this four-tracker, echoes of material from the Sender label, Maetrik and Niederflur emerge. “Illape” is built on tearing metallic rhythms and tough drums, while “Wentworth” provides a more visceral approach. There, the screeching riffs and malevolent sound scapes pile up over a relentless rhythm. “Scuff” is the release’s most descriptive track, with a rattling bass and hissing percussion making nods to Chain Reaction’s most visceral moments. Finally, there’s “Cap FT”, a less frenetic track. With its dubby groove and vocal sample crooning ‘ah, ah’, it’s a soothing antidote to what preceded it.
